Armored Core 6 will have 1v1 duels and 3v3 multiplayer that’s like a ‘mecha festival with metal flying everywhere’-

Almost every arcade I’ve visited in Japan over the last decade had a floor dedicated almost exclusively to the latest iteration of the Gundam Versus series, a fighting game that seems to be carrying the entire Japanese arcade industry on its shoulders. It’s essentially a 2v2, 3D arena fighter where you pick your Gundam, fly and dash through the air to dance around your opponents, and tap in button combos to do flashy moves. It’s a frantic and overwhelming game to learn, which immediately came to mind when Italked to FromSoftware’s developers about their plans for multiplayer in Armored Core 6, and they said the words “metal flying everywhere.”

Armored Core 6, like most games in FromSoftware’s long-running (but also long-dormant) mecha series, is primarily singleplayer. In the story, you’re a mercenary pawn of uncaring corporations vying for power, and every mission reinforces how little they give a shit about you. An oppressive haze hangs over you despite victory after v…

Asus’s new gaming routers look like spiders, are Wi-Fi 7 ready-

Wi-Fi is one of the best known cryptids of the tech world: We’ve all heard of it, none of us have seen it, most of us don’t even know how it works, and its name means literally nothing.

Recently peak Wi-Fi has become even more elusive, because shortly after the Wi-Fi 6E standard was introduced Wi-Fi 7 started bustling through, with the first router released even before the platform was certified. CES this year felt like the final nail in the Wi-Fi 6 coffin as we saw more 7 routers introduced, and that included some beastly looking models from Asus.

The first is a gaming router if I’ve ever seen one. I know that because for a moment I thought it was a scary shadow ship from Babylon 5. The ROG Rapture GT-BE98 has a full complement of eight spider leg antennae and a black finish to complete the image. This is then emblazoned with plenty of ROG angry eyes. It looks like it’s ready to down a Monster and get headshots with you all night long.

Critical Role’s D&D dungeon master Matthew Mercer would love to make a videogame ‘should all those stars align’, though I think it’s a little more likely than that-

Critical Role is pretty much the biggest livestreamed D&D campaign, by sheer popularity and volume alone. Starting halfway through the group’s home game in 2015, to call the game’s rise to popularity ‘meteoric’ is an understatement.

It’s gone from an experiment by Geek & Sundry to its own enterprise with heaps of merch, a charity foundation, officially-sanctioned D&D settings, board games, its own unique systems like Candela Obscura, and a very solid animated series with two seasons and counting. And, according to a recent interview with Dicebreaker, we could get a Critical Role videogame, too.

Responding to a question as to whether he’d like to make the leap to a digital world, Critical Role’s DM Matthew Mercer responds with a bit of caution, saying it would “require the right idea, the right development studio and the right budget.” However, he goes on to say that he’d “love to see that in the future, should all those stars align”.

Explore some excellent open-world puzzling in Isles of Sea and Sky-

Lovers of exploration-based puzzlers and clever twists on old game styles should do themselves a favor and check out the recently-released Isles of Sea and Sky. In it, you explore an oceanic world of magical islands, all of which are jam-packed with classic sokoban (block-pushing) puzzles to solve.

As you progress in the world you unlock new powers that push boxes and blocks, or let you move around, in new ways, giving you insight on older unsolved puzzles or access to new areas you’d yet to see. Perhaps you’ll summon a little whirlwind person that can be pushed around like a block by wind, but can also grab and throw you a distance in certain directions to let you bypass obstacles. A later series of puzzles mirrors your character.

Isles of Sea and Sky is wrapped up in a colorful world reminiscent of old Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Color games. The palette of colors aries region to region, but the soundtrack and sound effects really remind me of that era by using…

Former Bungie devs show fury and sorrow over layoffs, following the revelation that CEO Pete Parsons allegedly spent at least $2,414,550 on vintage cars in the past 2 years

220 Bungie developers lost their jobs in July, as a dire industry climate of similar layoffs continues well into 2024. As is usually the case, those impacted took to social media to make the human cost of the cuts, which Bungie describe as being due to “enduring economic conditions”, known.

The layoffs themselves have been unceremonious and poorly timed, according to former employees: “Right after a great performance review, I got [laid off],” writes vista artist Weston T. Jones. “This is how I found out I’m laid off,” adds sound designer Tzvi Sherman, quoting Bungie’s announcement on Twitter.

One particularly harrowing example comes from Kelly Jin, a former producer at Bungie, who was laid off right before she received maternity leave benefits: “It’s just really bad timing b/c my maternity leave was supposed to start next Monday and I got laid off today.” Jin adds that her child is due to arrive “literally any day now”.

“NGL, after I found out this morning I kee…

AI in big budget games is inevitable, say dev vets from Assassin’s Creed and Everquest 2- ‘Developers hate it … the money is still going to drive absolutely everybody to do it’-

AI’s a thorny subject, to say the least. The big issue with technology is that it advances in waves. There’ll be a very long time where it feels like nothing’s changing much at all, and then suddenly we’re all saddled with something new to irreversibly change our lives.

The trouble with these sudden ramps is it takes a while for the law, social etiquette, and plain ol’ common decency to catch up. Generative AI’s been no different—it’s created ripples in art, music, writing, coding, design, and by virtue of the fact all of those are part of it in some way: game development.

The latest two cents thrown into the ongoing debate comes via an interview from our friends over at Edge Magazine, who sat down with former Assassin’s Creed lead producer Jade Raymond and Raph Koster, the former co-director of Everquest 2 co-director.

“AAA games have gone from taking teams of 50 people two years to make to now sometimes taking teams of hundreds of people more than ten years…
